dsl security
|
With DSL and other "always on" technologies emerging, there is a need for concern about our personal computers and the private information stored on them. These are some simple steps to help safeguard you from unwanted attacks.
Turn off your computer. When you're not using your computer, simply turn it off. It is the easiest, cheapest, and most secure method of keeping others out of your machine.
Unplug your connection. Unplugging your DSL connection when you're not using it is another virtually effortless way to keep others out.
Turn off Windows File and Print Sharing. MS Windows uses a networking service called File and Print Sharing to allow users to exchange information and print to a common printer. This feature is generally only used in a LAN or WAN environment and is usually not needed for home users.
Use Complicated Passwords. Do not use family members' names, pets' names, social security numbers, addresses, phone numbers, or other personal information for a password. These tend to be both commonly used and easily obtained. Make sure passwords are at least 8 characters in length. Use a combination of lowercase letters and numbers. Also, do not use the same password for everything.
Keep your virus-scan software current. Install virus-scan software on your machine and update it at least once a month. Some programs will update automatically while you're online.
Install a personal firewall on your PC. Firewalls come in both hardware and software form and use filters to keep others out of your computer. There are very affordable solutions today for home users.
DSL service is less vulnerable than other broadband communications, such as cable modems. Cable is a point-to-multipoint connection, much like a LAN. DSL is a point-to-point connection between the user's home and the telephone company's switching office. Each connection authenticates and secures the communication between the customer's PC and the internet. |
